When's the First Day of School on Martha's Vineyard?

Important back-to-school dates for 2013.

Most Island kids head back to school Sept. 9, 2013 — weeks later than many of their mainland peers, who don't have to wait for summer traffic to subside before they can resume classes.

Members of high school sports teams, however, start practices much earlier: Aug. 19 for football and Aug. 22 for all other fall sports.

Here are some other back-to-school dates to be aware of, from the Martha's Vineyard Public Schools All Island Events Calendar:

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School Schedule Scramble: Aug. 21, 22, 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., guidance dept.

MVRHS Freshmen Orientation: Sept. 4, 7:30 a.m. to noon, Performing Arts Center.

MVRHS Freshmen Parents Night: Sept. 12, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center.

MVRHS Seniors' College Application Night: Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center.

Edgartown School Annual Open House, Health Fair, Garden Celebration and Potluck Dinner: Sept. 18, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

MVRHS Back-to-School Night: Sept. 28, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
