Rainy Day Round-Up: 5 Things to Do on the Vineyard

Rain falling from the clouds, a high rip current warning at the beaches, outdoor events cancelled: What will we do with ourselves on Martha's Vineyard today? Here are some suggestions — add yours in the comments.

Yes, "it's good for the crops" — and that's more than just a platitude here: Martha's Vineyard is a farming community as well as a vacation spot.

But still, all this rain can be a bit discouraging, even inconvenient: Today's Musical Mondays concert at Featherstone is cancelled due to the forecast, which according to the National Weather Service predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms today.

A high rip current may also affect swimming at local beaches until this evening, and more rain is predicted tomorrow, with skies gradually clearing in time for the Fourth of July, the NWS advises.

So what shall we do with ourselves on Martha's Vineyard today?

  1. Mini-golf is a fun activity you can sandwich in between cloudbursts. Along with its miniputt course, Island Cove Adventures on State Road in Tisbury also has snacks and home-made ice cream.
  2. Shopping is always an option, especially when there are bargains to be found: On Lagoon Road in Vineyard Haven, Chicken Alley Thrift Shop's daily special is 50 percent off linens today. You can also pick up some board games for indoor entertainment.
  3. Senior gardeners get 15 percent off plants today at Middletown Nursery in West Tisbury.
  4. Love a cappella harmony singing? Download the new album from Vineyard Sound and give it a listen.
  5. Even if you're not a reader, Island libraries are rainy-day treasures with movies, games, crafts and other activities. Try the nearest library to you, or take a trip to another town — the CLAMS card lets you borrow at any Island library. Click here to find them all.
