South Road Closed for Obama Visit: Buses Rerouted

The closure of South Road during President Barack Obama's Chilmark vacation has led the Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority to change several bus routes through Aug. 18. Here's how to get to and from up-Island via VTA while the Obamas are here.

The Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority has issued the following announcement:

From August 10 at 2:00pm through the early evening of August 18, 2013, South Road will be closed to all through traffic. As a result, the VTA must re-route buses.

Route #5 service between West Tisbury Town Hall and Beetlebung Corner will be suspended for the duration of the road closure. We will be diverting routes to provide service to Aquinnah via North Road and Menemsha Crossroads. Timed transfers that are scheduled to occur for Routes #6, #7 and #9 will not occur during the road closure.

Detailed route schedules to follow.

Edgartown to Aquinnah:
Route #6 from Church Street will still depart at :12, which will travel to the West Tisbury Town Hall as usual and depart there at :38. This bus will proceed up State Road, past the Fairgrounds, to North Road where it will continue on to Chilmark Town via Menemsha Crossroads, and then on to Aquinnah via South Road. There will be no pick-ups or drop-offs at the Chilmark Community Center. The Tribe schedule pull-ins will remain the same.

From Vineyard Haven to Aquinnah:
Route #3 from the VH SSA will still depart at :07, and will go directly to Aquinnah, via North Rd. Old County Rd will not be served by this route.
Old County Rd will be serviced by Route #4 for passengers to go to the West Tisbury Town Hall for connections, as needed.

From Aquinnah:
There will be a departure on the hour from the Gay Head Lighthouse which will go down Lighthouse Rd, then on to Edgartown via the West Tisbury Town Hall.
The :10 departure from the Lighthouse will go directly to Vineyard Haven via North Rd and State Rd.

Youth Hostel to Vineyard Haven:
Take Route #6 and make transfer at North Rd at :40. This trip is not guaranteed. Youth Hostel riders are encouraged to travel through to Edgartown or the Airport for connections.
Late night trips upon request will still be honored.

We apologize for any and all inconveniences.
