When Do We Turn The Clocks Back?

Those "dark at 5 p.m." afternoons are right around the corner, but sunrise will greet us earlier in the day — and according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, a minute later in Aquinnah and Chilmark than on the rest of Martha's Vineyard.

Written by William Laforme and Louisa Hufstader

This weekend, we turn back the clocks and say goodbye to Daylight Saving Time during the overnight hours heading into Sunday, Nov. 3. That means an extra hour of sleep for many of us, followed by a period of disorientation as we adjust to earlier sunrises and sunsets.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac website, the sun will rise over Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury at 7:16 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 2, and it will set at 5:35 p.m. (Sunrise and sunset in Aquinnah and Chilmark are one minute later in the Almanac's timetable.)

The next morning (Sunday, Nov. 3) the sun will rise over the eastern part of Martha's Vineyard at 6:17 a.m., 6:18 a.m. farther up-Island

Sunset will be (wait for it…) 4:34 p.m. down-Island and 4:35 p.m. in Chilmark and Aquinnah, which the Old Farmer's Almanac quaintly still identifies as "Gay Head."

Are you looking forward to the time change? Any special plans for that extra hour Saturday night, Nov. 2 into Sunday morning, Nov. 3? Tell us in the comments.
