Oak Bluffs Fireworks: What to Know Before You Go

Five things to know about one of the most spectacular events of the summer on Martha's Vineyard: Friday's band concert and fireworks in Oak Bluffs.

Are you looking forward to the Oak Bluffs band concert and fireworks Friday night? Expect to see more police than in past years: The Boston Marathon bombings have led the OBPD to beef up security, and access to Ocean Park will be limited to specific areas, said Lieut. Timothy Williamson of the Oak Bluffs Police Department.

"Spectators carrying backpacks, duffel bags, coolers, or other containers into the locations will be subjected to search. People not carrying these items will be ushered through uninhibited," Williamson wrote in a police department announcement.

Here are five things to know before you head out for the fireworks:

  1. All of Ocean Avenue will be closed to traffic at 3 p.m.; Seaview Avenue from Lake Avenue to Samoset Avenue will be closed to traffic at 4 p.m.
  2. Parking is available at Sunset Park and Waban Park, access from Naushon Avenue. Parking is $10 and proceeds fund the fireworks show. Handicapped parking is at the Steamship Authority staging area and around the Civil War monument.
  3. The 8:15 p.m. SSA ferry arrival and the 7:30 p.m. New Bedford fast ferry arrival will be re-routed to the Vineyard Haven terminal. The New York fast ferry is scheduled to arrive in Oak Bluffs at 10:30 p.m.
  4. The Edgartown shuttle bus will stop at the corner of Seaview Avenue and Tuckernuck Avenue (at Seaview Condominiums) and the Vineyard Haven shuttle will stop at the corner of Lake Avenue and Dukes County Avenue.
  5. The Vineyard Haven Band begins playing at 7:30 p.m. in the Ocean Park bandstand; the fireworks show begins at 9 p.m.
