Representative Tim Madden Celebrates the Island’s Successful Farm to School Program

With garden tours and a ribbon cutting, Rep. Madden helped Island Grown Schools kick off the new school year

On Wednesday, State Representative Tim Madden traveled to Martha’s Vineyard to help launch the new Island Grown Harvest of the Month program and to help inaugurate the new West Tisbury School kitchen and up-island meals program.  His visit coincided with the statewide Mass Harvest for Students Week, in which schools across the Commonwealth will be highlighting local food in their cafeterias. Rep. Madden’s first stop was the Tisbury School, where the kids held their first taste test in the lunchroom tasting a variety of local tomatoes, in honor of September’s Harvest of the Month. Madden then visited the West Tisbury School where he was given a tour of the school’s garden. In the garden, kindergarten teacher Teri Mello, along with a few …

New School Year Means New Food For Up-Island Students

The remodeling of the kitchen at the West Tisbury School is underway

This past year, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah residents decided it was time to put their kid’s school lunches into local hands. After months and months of hard work and determination, the renovation of the kitchen at the West Tisbury School was approved by all three Up-Island Regional School District (UIRSD) towns and this summer, construction began. The new kitchen will not only mean a change in the lunches served to the West Tisbury school children, but the Chilmark School children and the Aquinnah children who attend those schools as well. It also means that Chilmark School students to be served hot meals for the very first time in the school’s history. The effort to take over the school lunches at West Tisbury and Chilmark …

West Tisbury School Gets Kitchen, Up-Island Kids Get Great Food

Last night’s final budget approval in Aquinnah means the Up-Island Regional School District will get its new kitchen and Up-Island kids will get local, good food

After months and months of hard work and determination, the renovation of the kitchen at the West Tisbury School has been approved. With the final vote taken last night in Aquinnah, all three Up-Island Regional School District (UIRSD) towns agreed that this was the right move for their kids. The new kitchen will not only mean a change in the lunches served to the West Tisbury school children, but the Chilmark School children and the Aquinnah children who attend those schools as well. It also means that Chilmark School students to be served hot meals for the very first time in the school’s history. For the past 23 years, Chartwells, a multinational food service corporation, has had a contract with the school system. However, currently …

Up-Island School Committee Approves Budget for New Kitchen and Lunch Program

After a change of heart, the new budget includes funds for both a renovated kitchen and a school-run lunch program

After many hours of discussion at the Up-Island School Committee budget meeting last night, the committee passed a motion to renovate the West Tisbury School kitchen and to take over the lunch program from the food-service corporation Chartwells. Chartwells has had a contract with the school system for the past 23 years, but currently only serves the West Tisbury and Chilmark Schools and the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. All of the other Island schools have independent lunch programs. Last week, the committee voted to keep the contract with Chartwells, though they did support the kitchen renovations. However, between last week’s meeting and last night, committee member Perry Ambulos had a change of heart. Nicole Cabot, Island …

A New Kitchen? Why Now?

Nicole Cabot, mother and member of Island Grown Initiative, answers why the time is now.

Why now? We have been asked the question “Why do we need to make these changes now?” This past Tuesday, members of the Up-Island School Meals Improvement Group met to discuss priorities for the Chilmark and West Tisbury Schools’ meals program. There were many parents present representing both schools. The dialogue was extremely positive. It is one area where both schools can leave our educational philosophies aside and discuss ways to bring the best nutrition options to all of our children. At the Up-Island School Committee meeting immediately following, the school committee voted to keep the with the third party provider Chartwells, though there is continued support for kitchen renovations at the West Tisbury School. The needed $100,000 …
