Vineyard Agent Warns of Craigslist Rental Scam

Don't believe everything you read on craigslist: A Martha's Vineyard realty agent says a scammer has been angling for unwary renters.

Craigslist is full of rental offers. But not all of them are legitimate, according to a Facebook update from the Homes on Martha's Vineyard realty business managed by Susan L. Cahoon: "I've had 3 phone calls from people who see a rental posted on Craig's List for a home in Edgartown available for $1,000 per month. It's a summer rental listing we have that is $3,800 per week! The scammer takes the photos we've posted (not on Craig's List) and creates an ad with those photos and info. They ask that you send a deposit to somewhere in Egypt. Fortunately the people I spoke with were savvy enough to smell a rat! My name was in there somewhere (one thing that internet exposure can't prevent) so these people called me. I quickly set them straight…

Duckling Rescued by Edgartown Police

Thanks to an alert family and the Edgartown Police Department, a wayward duckling nicknamed "Stormy" is safe and sound with a new family after falling down a storm drain Sunday.

Edgartown police officers served and protected an at-risk duckling Sunday, according to a status update complete with photographs on the the town police department's Facebook page: "This little fella had a rough day today. While on patrol one of our officers was waved down by a family concerned about a duckling. The family had seen it walk across the street all alone and fall into a storm grate. Bonnie Parent volunteered to go into the drain and retrieve the duckling after which he was named "Stormy" by witnesses. An exhaustive search for the duckling's family turned up nothing so he was brought to a wildlife preserve, cleaned up and adopted by a family of chicks." Cruise Ship to Arrive in Edgartown Tuesday

The first of 22 small-ship cruises scheduled for Edgartown visits in 2013 is scheduled to drop anchor in the outer harbor Tuesday night with up to 100 passengers aboard.

Love them or hate them, the cruise ships are coming: Small cruise ships will visit Edgartown 22 times this summer and fall. The first of the vessels from American Cruise Lines of Guilford, Conn. is scheduled to drop anchor in the outer harbor at around 8 p.m. Tuesday. After Patch broke the news in February that Edgartown harbormaster Charlie Blair had snared the American Cruise Lines contract from Tisbury, some readers weren't pleased to hear about it, commenting: "Disgusting. And those things pollute the air and the water. It's an assault on Edgartown Harbor, has no business being anywhere near Edgartown, and whoever authorized that decision is a complete idiot." "I think Oak Bluffs would be a better destination for the cruise ship to …

No Jail for Disbarred Lawyer Accused of Fraud in Edgartown

Charged with multiple counts and separate cases of fraud, larceny, forgery and misrepresentation, 64-year-old John C. McBride of Edgartown has been placed on probation until 2015 and must undergo counseling, court records indicate.

He drove a BMW, kept a home on South Water Street in Edgartown and appeared to be a prosperous attorney. But John C. McBride, now 64, has been ineligible to practice law since 2005, when he was disbarred. That didn't prevent him from representing a Martha's Vineyard man in a 2011 insurance claim involving a bicycling injury, in which McBride advised the man to accept a $5,000 settlement. According to documents filed in Edgartown District Court, the bicyclist became suspicious when weeks went by during which McBride continued to assure him the check was in the mail, and contacted the insurance company directly to learn that McBride had received and deposited the check into his own account. This case of forgery is one of several in which …
