Watch: Dukes County Dispatchers Take the Cake

The people whose steady voices you hear when you call 911 on Martha's Vineyard are now working out of a brand-new communications center at the airport. A ribbon-cutting Sunday celebrated dispatchers with a family cook-out and a cake like no other.

"Dispatchers: The Unsung Heroes," read the tribute in icing atop a sheet cake that also bore a frosting version of the Dukes County Sheriff's Department badge. The cake was just one part of Sunday's ribbon-cutting ceremony at the county's new communications center at the airport, where county officials, Boy Scouts and families mingled with first responders and dispatchers celebrating their expanded new workplace. Formerly crammed into a small office, the dispatchers now have roomier digs with high-tech desktops surmounted by large monitors for heads-up displays of critical information. Sheriff Michael McCormack gave a keynote address before inviting county Major Susan Schofield, who supervises the dispatchers, to cut the ribbon across the …

Islanders See Sharply Higher Costs for Medical Tests

The average cost of colonoscopies, MRIs and CT scans in Dukes County is $3,260 to $4,960 higher than on the Cape; mammograms cost an average of $520 more here than on Barnstable County, according to data.

It costs nearly $5,000 more, on average, to get a colonoscopy on Martha's Vineyard than in Barnstable County on the mainland. That's according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter healthcare consumers. A CT scan on the Vineyard averages $4,400 more than on the Cape, a mammogram $520 more and an MRI $3,260 more, according to the New Choice Health data. These big regional differences have been in the news lately: As the Washington Post wrote on Wednesday, "One hospital charges $8,000 - another $38,000." Using the same data as the Post, The New York Times listed out the prices of a series of procedures in hospitals across the country. The Times and the Post used data from Centers for …

Philanthropy Study Says Dukes County Residents Almost in Step With Average American

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has released detailed information on philanthropy by state, county, town and zip code.

The percentage of their income Dukes County residents give to charity is less than the county, state and country averages, according to a study released today. Dukes County residents give just a bit less then the average American, but a considerable amount more then the rest of Massachusetts residents. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "How America Gives" study reported that Dukes County residents, with a median discretionary income of $46,640, had a median contribution of 4.2 percent, or $1,941, of their income to charity in 2008, the tax year for which data was collected. By way of comparison the state, and country's median contribution was 2.8 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. (See chart below.) The study is based on exact dollar …
