Departing West Tisbury Principal Hailed in California

West Tisbury Elementary's loss is San Clemente High School's gain, and the California school district that snapped up the decorated Marine reservist is singing his praises on Patch.

One of the most distinguished educators to make his mark on Martha's Vineyard has accepted a position leading a California high school. Michael Halt, principal of West Tisbury School and a Marine reservist for more than 20 years, departs this summer for San Clemente High School. Music Teacher Grammy Nominations Close Today

Today is the deadline to nominate your favorite music teacher for a newly-established Grammy award honoring music educators. What Martha's Vineyard music teachers do you think are worthy of this award? Tell us in the comments.

The April 15 deadline is upon us for a new Grammy award honoring music educators. The new award will be presented for the first time during next year's awards ceremony. The Music Educator Award was created "to recognize music educators for their contributions to our musical landscape and their positive influence on their students' musical experiences," according to a press release from the Grammy Foundation, which continues: What Martha's Vineyard music teachers deserve to be nominated for this award? Town Meeting: West Tisbury Eyes $2.8 Million Police Station

West Tisbury holds its annual public meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the school gym, where voters will take up everything from a $2.8 million police station to a non-binding referendum on Senator Dianne Feinstein's gun control bill. The town election follows

Dog owners over 70 will no longer have to pay a fee to license their pets, if West Tisbury voters approve Article 19 on the annual town meeting warrant. Article 8 asks voters to decide whether the town should "Appropriate the sum of Two Million Eight Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,800,000) for the construction and equipping of a new Police Station, to be located at the Public Safety Building site." The town meeting warrant has 37 articles, all but one of them concerning town expenditures. The final article, placed on the warrant by petition, is a non-binding referendum related to the Sandy Hook school shootings in Newtown, CT last year and subsequent efforts to regulate certain firearms:  "Whereas, we have witnessed the slaughter of our …

Martha's Vineyard Teen Voted Finalist in Female-Drummer Contest

Your votes helped propel West Tisbury's Maddie Scott, 16, to the top 10 under-18 finalists in the international Hit Like a Girl drumming competition sponsored by DRUM! magazine. Winners will be announced April 18.

Congratulations are in order for 16-year-old Maddie Scott of West Tisbury, whose spirited drum performance of the K-pop hit "Gangnam Style" earned more than 1,800 votes in the online, international Hit Like a Girl drumming contest sponsored by DRUM! magazine. We'll never know how many of those votes came from Martha's Vineyard Patch readers, but you don't have to be a Vineyarder to see — and hear — that Scott's got real chops on those traps. As a top-10 finalist in the under-18 division, Scott joins a diverse group of peers as young as 8 who are vying for recognition and prizes that range from the grand prize of a brand-new drum kit with sticks, cases and a $500 gift certificate to the third-place winner's $500 electronic drum kit. 7a Foods Reopens with New Menu

Award-winning "farm to take-out" shop 7a Foods is back for the 2013 season in West Tisbury.

Open at 10 a.m.: 7a Foods, 1045 State Road, West Tisbury, 508-693-4636. The latest Martha's Vineyard seasonal business to return for 2013 is the one MV Patch readers named as the best sandwich maker on Martha's Vineyard last year: 7a Foods on State Road in West Tisbury, to the rear of the Alley's General Store parking lot. Proprietors Wenonah Madison and Dan Sauer, who are also the parents of two young boys, have made their "farm to take-out" shop a mecca for hungry Islanders, summer people and tourists. Their "regulars" have included everyone from local fishermen to President Barack Obama's Secret Service agents, Madison said, and 7a Foods staff have scores of breakfast orders memorized for customers who want "the usual."
