Festive Weekend Planned in Edgartown

The inaugural Martha's Vineyard Wine Festival, the returning Pink & Green Weekend and perennial favorite Mother's Day are all coming up. Here are some tips to help you plan a fun-filled weekend in Edgartown.

Edgartown merchants aren't waiting for Memorial Day weekend to roll around, instead kick-starting the 2013 season with a pair of festivals starting Thursday and Friday: The inaugural Martha's Vineyard Wine Festival begins with a "Rosé Reception" Thursday afternoon and continues through Sunday with events ranging from intimate dinners to a "Grand Tasting" Saturday. SATURDAY ARTS Submission Deadline for "Island Faces" Portrait Contest The Martha's Vineyard Museum, in collaboration with Featherstone Center for the Arts, is celebrating the faces of Martha’s Vineyard and inviting portrait entries through end of the day today. A panel of four judges will jury the competition. The winning portraits will debut at the Museum’s summer opening reception on June 15, 2012, and remain on display through the summer. The public will also be able to vote on a separate “People’s Choice” category, the winners of which will be featured on display at Featherstone in the fall of 2012. Free Admission for Islanders The Martha's Vineyard Museum has announced it will offer free admission or pay what you can to Vineyard residents every Saturday beginning on November 5th and continuing until spring. Current exhibitions included in the free admission are: Out of the Depths: Martha's Vineyard Shipwrecks, Eisenstaedt and Us, and We Are Marching Along: Martha's Vineyard and the Civil War. Visitors can also see permanent exhibitions including the original Fresnel Lens from the Gay Head Lighthouse, a carriage shed of vehicles and vessels, an interactive kids' space, and an exhibition on the Wampanoags. Winter Farmers' Market This year’s second Winter Farmers’ Market will be on Saturday from 10 am – 1 pm. Held in the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, this bi-weekly gathering of more than 25 vendors is quickly becoming an off-season favorite. There will be a little of everything: late fall veggies, jams and jellies, local eggs and meat, home spun wool hats, felted soaps and more. Barn Raisers Ball You can come back to the Ag Hall on Saturday night at 7:30 pm to celebrate 18 years of the Agricultural Society's new home.
