Hundreds of athletes tested their strength and endurance early Monday morning during the first-ever Vineyard Warrior triathlon, which kicked off at State Beach at 7 a.m. The race took participants all over the Island, from Oak Bluffs to West Tisbury and Edgartown, and back, on a one-mile swim, 24.7-mile bike ride and 6.2 mile run.

1. Today marks the 10th anniversary of September 11. American Legion Post 257 and the Tisbury Fire Department will lead a public commemoration of the anniversary at Five Corners in Vineyard Haven, beginning at 8:30 a.m. 2/ The first-ever Olympic distance triathlon, the Vineyard Warrior race, will lead participants on a one-mile swim, a 24.7-mile bike, and a 6.2 mile run through Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and West Tisbury. The race starts around 7 a.m. at Inkwell Beach. 3. Not up to a whole triathlon? The Vineyard Haven Library is hosting a 5K and ½ mile fun run for kids starting at 9:45 a.m. at the library.
