For Valentine's Day, tell us what you love about the Island. I'll start: It's in my DNA.
Why do we choose to live on Martha's Vineyard? What's unique about this place we call home? Since it's Valentine's Day, we want to hear from you about what you love most about the Island and what makes it so special. Please post comments and pictures here to share the love. I'll start: I love MV because I did a lot of my growing up here and because it's in my DNA from both sides of my family, going back three generations on my father's side and two on my mother's. Mom and her brother Henry Robinson grew up in what is now called the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, next to the Old Whaling Church on Main Street in Edgartown. These days, she lives near the Edgartown Light — very near, in summer, when she rents out her house and moves aboard her …

What off-season? Chilmark Chocolates is open through Feb. 17 and Menemsha Fish Market is selling and serving seafood daily.
Fish for Tuesday You've got to hand it to Stanley Larsen. Even in the depths of a Martha's Vineyard winter, he's kept the doors open at Menemsha Fish Market (formerly Poole's), selling seafood and a surprisingly diverse menu of carry-out meals. At lunchtime Tuesday, people lined up for fish sandwiches — freshly steamed, your choice from the day's catch of salmon, cod or whatever's freshest, served on a bun— lobster quesadillas and the market's signature hot lobster rolls. Ask for it by name Linda Thompson of Chilmark drove to the fish market for a delicacy that isn't on the fish market's menu. Thompson calls it "Half and Half," a straightforward name for her preferred 50-50 mixture of Larsen's clam chowder and his lobster bisque. Combining…

A plea for possibility, hope, and love.
Dear Martha – Why is it that every time I mention casually, that Valentine’s Day is around the corner I get an eye roll, a scoff, and a general bolt of negative energy from most everyone? (that’s not “everyone” but I would say it’s most of the people I know with the exception of a special few). What’s up with hating love? I don’t at all get it. Yes, yes, I’m aware that people think the holiday was created by Hallmark and other card companies to drive revenue….you know what, blah blah blah. I love love, and I love the celebration of it, and I love getting a card from someone who loves me, and I love sending one to someone I love. Why does engaging in Valentine’s Day make you a sell-out these days? It’s completely depressing. Since you …

There are major nutritional differences between different types of chocolates
Chocolate is a staple of Valentine's Day, and for good reason. It's a sinfully sweet treat, of course, but it also contains flavonoids, a type of antioxidant that has been shown to have health benefits for the very target of Cupid's arrow—the heart. But not all chocolate products are created equal: they can vary wildly in flavonoid content, fat and calories, and quality of ingredients. So how can you be sure you're expressing your love with the most healthful chocolate option? According to dietitian Gloria Tsang, many products you might find in the chocolates section of your grocery store or gift shop have much more sugar and fat than real chocolate. "It's always a good idea to stick to real chocolate rather than candies and bars with …

The size or price (or lack of) isn't always important. Macaroni necklaces are some of the most cherished gifts ever, but probably if you haven't been married to the person for 40 years... With Valentine’s Day close at hand, we want to know your favorite spot to take your sweetheart … in the dead of winter
Come early June, there’s no shortage of romantic locations on the Island. No matter where you turn, there are rolling green hills, fields of wildflowers and grazing horses, sunsets and moon rises over the ocean. In the middle of February, there aren’t quite as many obvious spots to bring out the romantic in us. However, that doesn’t mean that the Island in winter isn’t a place for romance. For example, a sunny morning walk on Lucy Vincent Beach, even if you are buried under layers of coats and hats, can inspire poetry. And dinner at Lambert’s Cove Restaurant, with a dark wind outside and candlelight inside, is a rival for a summer Menemsha sunset (plus there’s more parking) Maybe a night together at the Mansion House, followed by breakfast…
