Chilmark Tackles House Size Limits

A public hearing at 5 p.m. today will let Chilmark residents air their opinions on a proposed bylaw limiting the size of houses built in the town.

How big is too big, when it comes to houses on Martha's Vineyard? The town of Chilmark is grappling with this question, holding a public forum at the library today at 5 p.m. to discuss a proposed by-law that would limit house sizes to 3,500 square feet of newly-constructed living space per three acres. Special permits could allow houses of up to 6,000 square feet. The proposed bylaw, which accompanies this post, states that its purpose is "to ensure that future residential development: The proposed bylaw was spurred by the construction of a more than 8,200-square-foot home on Quitsa Pond, according to a report in the Martha's Vineyard Times. Do you think the proposed bylaw is a good idea? Or is it overbearing? Tell us in the comments. Stay…

Sold in Chilmark: 1 Bed, 1 Bath, $1.3 Million

The land's the thing, of course: Nearly nine acres off North Road in rural up-Island Martha's Vineyard.

A Florida man last month spent $1.3 million on a two-story home in Chilmark with one bedroom and one bathroom in less than 1,000 square feet of living space built in 1997. The house at 129 Old Farm Road may not be large, but the lot is 8.79 acres, according to the Trulia real estate website. The property is located southeast of North Road at Mill Brook Lane.
