Oak Bluffs and Dutton Call it a Day

The town administrator will leave his post on July 31.

Michael Dutton resigned last Friday as Oak Bluffs town administrator after five years as the town's day-to-day manager. Dutton's departure was not unexpected, and followed several weeks of executive session huddles and a public announcement that selectmen believed Dutton's contract with the town was not valid. Both the town and Dutton had retained attorneys familiar with labor law. Kathleen Burton, chairman of the board of selectmen, read a terse eigh- sentence statement to a packed house at the board's regular meeting yesterday at the town library. The statement, dated Friday, July 8, said the board had accepted Dutton's resignation, and that he would continue to work on town affairs until the end of the month. The board and Dutton have …

Oak Bluffs Bans Outdoor Amplified Music . . . Again

Selectmen have pulled the plugs on amplifiers near the harbor.

It’s time once again to drag the amps indoors. Oak Bluffs selectmen have banned outdoor amplified music on the harbor for the rest of the summer as a result of noise complaints.   The decision comes at the end of a two-week trial period, and is the latest in a string of decisions regarding outdoor music on the Oak Bluffs harbor. Faced with complaints and unable to agree on a way to limit noise levels, selectmen voted at their May 24 meeting to temporarily ban outdoor amplified music altogether. Musicians cried foul and turned out in force protest the decision. Their efforts worked—at least temporarily. Selectmen lifted the ban and instituted a probation period.
