New Wine Shop Opens in Edgartown

Vintage MV Wine & Spirits has opened its doors in Nevin Square, soon to be joined by an adjacent coffee bar. Both businesses are owned by Sara Webber and Atria sommelier John Clift.

The first of two new liquor stores to be licensed for seasonal operation in downtown Edgartown is open for business in the Nevin Square shopping complex on Winter Street. Vintage MV Wine & Spirits opened its doors with a party Saturday, manager Paige Gould said. The new shop specializes in wine, with a selection of spirits, beers, soft drinks and chocolates. Cheeses will be joining the retail mix, too, Gould said. Vintage MV is partnering with Atria restaurant for a series of wine dinners beginning July 10 with Far Niente; more information is available at the shop and Atria. The shop at 29 Winter St. is owned by Sara Webber and John Clift, Atria's sommelier, who are also opening Coffee Culture next door in a couple of weeks, Gould said. …

Edgartown Store Drops Liquor License Request

The owners of Sophia's One-Stop Mart on Main Street, which lost its right to sell alcohol last year, have more work to do before they should be allowed to get a new liquor license, Edgartown officials said Monday.

An upper Main Street, Edgartown convenience store that lost its liquor license last year will not be selling beer and wine again any time soon. Sophia's One-Stop Mart "has been a complete nuisance for us," Edgartown Police Chief Tony Bettencourt told selectmen at Monday's regular meeting, during a discussion of whether the store should again be licensed to sell alcohol. "This is not something I would support at all," Bettencourt continued. "We've spent a lot of hours there," monitoring and enforcing the rules on selling alcohol. 2 Summer Liquor Stores Approved for Edgartown

Two seasonal all-alcohol package stores proposed for downtown Edgartown got the green light from selectmen Monday.

Nevin Square and Main Street in Edgartown may both see new liquor boutiques this summer, following approval by the town selectmen Monday afternoon. One shop is slated for the Nevin Square complex at 29 Winter Street, where it will occupy the first floor (#23) and basement (#26), selling fine wines, craft beers and other products, according to Eve Vincent, attorney for applicant Sarah Elizabeth Webber. The other, owned by Barbara Courtney, is planned for 65 Main Street and in addition to alcoholic beverages will sell picnic supplies, gourmet foods and "a unique mix of home products," according to a statement read to the selectmen by her son Ted Courtney.
