Drury Thorp is one of the original founders of Shark Savers and is working on Martha's Vineyard for the JAWFEST celebration by teaching about conservation.
Q. What is your job? A. I'm a founder of Shark Savers. We work to raise awareness about how quickly sharks are disappearing from our oceans. We work with other non-profit organizations and governments to help set up shark sanctuaries. We go out into communities to help educate people. So we are here for JAWSFEST. Q. Why did you create the organization? A. I believe it was six years ago we started Shark Savers. We started the organization, as a group of divers, we recognized the importance of the role that the sharks play in our seas. It's a worldwide organization now. Q. At the Apex I The Kyries of Nature abound in blood In dying reefs and daemon floods That ebb and flow and fall and rise Between the silences of oceans And primal notions of civilizations fear. Along with reefs, the bones of nations fell In ignorance and lack of willingness To receive the spiritual gifts Of ancient myths that gave a human face To this world’s savagery. Now only man remains The one, living Apex predator, not prey And legends of murder fall in greed from tongues To become the final history our young believe. Look for donation shark heads at a number of Island businesses

As part of Jawfest's Summer for the Shark initiative, donation sharks have been placed at a number of Island businesses. The great white shark heads were designed and produced by local artist Paul McPhee. Donations will be collected from now until the end of the summer and distributed to shark conservation organizations.
