Martha's Vineyard is getting a visit from Ninth District Congressman Bill Keating today. According to Keating's website, he will be holding a "Coffee with Bill" constituent get-together at Waterside Market, 76 Main St. in Vineyard Haven from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Keating will also tour the storm-damaged Oak Bluffs waterfront and the erosion-compromised Gay Head Light in Aquinnah during his day on the Island, reports the Vineyard Gazette. Aquinnah voters will weigh whether or not the town should purchase and preserve Gay Head Light at Tuesday's Special Town Meeting.
The purchase and preservation of Gay Head Light will be the subject of a special town meeting in Aquinnah on Tuesday, Feb. 5, starting at 7:30pm. Voters will consider purchasing the lighthouse and the transfer of $5,000 of Community Preservation Committee Funds for a feasibility study. There will be two special town meetings on Tuesday: The first, the continuation of a Nov. 15, 2012 special town meeting that did not get a quorum and the second, dedicated to Gay Head Light. The Town of Aquinnah’s Board of Selectmen is seeking interested individuals to serve on a newly created committee seeking solutions to restore and protect the Gay Head Lighthouse. This will be an advisory committee reporting its recommendations to the Board of Selectmen on the ownership transfer, full restoration and relocation of the lighthouse. Membership consideration will be based primarily on those individuals whose background in community service relations, finance and grant writing will best serve the goal of saving the Gay Head Light. Interested individuals should submit correspondence detailing their desire to serve and what skills they can deliver that will be beneficial to the committee. Because this lighthouse is an iconic …
