At the top of North Water Street overlooking Edgartown Light, this home has its own deep-water dock. It was listed for sale at $10,900,000 last year and also bears a "For Rent" sign.
Until the late 20th century, the hill overlooking Edgartown Light was largely bare of construction. You can still find many locals with fond memories of sledding and playing touch football there, before the property was subdivided into a series of homes that largely block the passing view. But from those homes, the view remains sublime: the lighthouse, Edgartown Harbor and Chappy beyond. One of the houses, at 119 North Water Street, was listed for sale last year at $10,900,000. It's also available as a summer rental, according to a sign posted in a front window with the phone number 617-549-0337. Built in 1995, the property has three bedrooms and three bathrooms in just over 2,000 square feet of living space on a 16,000-square-foot lot. It…

What kind of business would you like to see replace Seasons Eatery and Pub on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs?
A longtime Oak Bluffs eating and drinking establishment, Seasons Eatery and Pub, went dark after the Super Bowl this year. The Vineyard Gazette reported in January that the Circuit Avenue business was closing after 27 years. The building is owned by Robert Murphy and James Ryan, who "bought it for the real estate and never expected to run the restaurant," Murphy told the Gazette. Now that it's for sale or lease, what would you like to see next in the former Seasons space? A new restaurant? A jazz and blues club? Something completely different? Share your visions for this vacancy in the comments section below. You may also be interested in: Stay Patched in! Lillian Hellman shopped here. Now let's share our visions for this Edgartown Harbor vacancy: What kind of business should come to this prominent corner location at 26 Dock St.?
This downtown storefront just across the street from the Quarterdeck on Edgartown Harbor has, over the decades, furnished summer jobs for generations of seasonal workers. In 1976 and 1977, I was one of them: I worked as a shopgirl at the Golden Door, owned by John Chirgwin, when it was at that location. It was a busy shop in the '70s. I remember once waiting on a formidable old woman who lit up a cigarette, waving off the no-smoking rule with a gruff "Don't worry, I know what's-his-name." Giving up, I brought her an ashtray, and later as I rang up her purchase I recognized the famous name imprinted on her credit card: LILLIAN HELLMAN. Hellman and the Golden Door are both long gone from Edgartown: The author and playwright died in 1984 and…

And that's what people like about it! I've had folks rent our home who've called or emailed me after their stay to ask who all the folks in the pictures are, and if it's true I actually won those sailing trophies...it's kind of fun.   more ›
