Life-savers Caleb Nicholson, Neal Farrell and JT Maher of Martha’s Vineyard are honored this morning at the American Red Cross Cape Cod and Islands Chapter's Annual Heroes Breakfast.
The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts writes: It had started like any other day on the water. It was September 2012, and Caleb Nicholson, Neal Farrell and John Thomas “JT” Maher were fishing on the waters of Aquinnah. They were about to pack it in for the day but decided on one more cast. It was that last-ditch effort that led them to three men clinging to a cooler in the choppy waters. The anchor line had sucked their 20-foot boat underwater, and the three men screamed for their lives as they tried to stay afloat. Nicholson, Farrell and Maher didn’t hesitate – quickly throwing them lines and flotation devices to bring the men aboard to safety. Three fisherman went out in search of shark bait; instead, they found a nearly 20-foot great white shark.
Three local fishermen who set out early Friday morning in search of shark bait got more than they bargained for when they happened upon a nearly 20-foot great white shark. The trio, commercial fisherman Jeff Lynch, 28 of Chilmark, and Will Farrissey and Mike Capen, both 21 of Oak Bluffs, were fishing for mackerel, which they intended to use to catch thresher and mako sharks at a later date. Their trip didn’t go as planned. About a mile off the coast of Aquinnah, around 7 a.m., they spotted a dead whale trapped in lobster gear. Lynch said he called the Coast Guard to report the find, then took out his cell phone to snap photos at their request.
