Two of Edgartown's longtime food businesses are back from their late-winter breaks and ready to serve.
After a two-month break to clean and refresh, Edgartown Seafood Market is open again at the convergence of Cook and Main streets. The fish market is currently open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Also open again in the same neighborhood: Soigne, the gourmet grocery, wine and carry-out shop at 190 Upper Main St., which returned from winter break April 6. Islanders (and others) on Facebook name their top Vineyard fish markets and seafood restaurants. Is your favorite missing? Add it in the comments.
In northern California's Napa Valley, where I was Patch editor for more than two years, we had a very lively group of more than 2,000 Facebook fans and I often turned to them for ideas, opinions and recommendations. So this Monday, technically my first as editor here (I actually started over the weekend because of the storm), I thought I'd give it a try on the MV Patch Facebook page. Here's what I asked: "It's Lundi Gras, the day before Mardi Gras and so Lent begins Wednesday. Where are the best places on the Island to get fish on Friday? Eat-in, carry-out or raw to cook, please let me know your favorites for a story on MV Patch. Thanks! Louisa" Here's what you said: (Note: The Bite, Larsen's and Seafood Shanty are closed for the season; …

At lunchtime Tuesday, people lined up for fish sandwiches — freshly steamed, your choice from the day's catch of salmon, cod or whatever's freshest, served on a bun— lobster quesadillas and the market's signature hot lobster rolls. Ask for it by name Linda Thompson of Chilmark drove to the fish market for a delicacy that isn't on the fish market's menu. Thompson calls it "Half and Half," a straightforward name for her preferred 50-50 mixture of Larsen's clam chowder and his lobster bisque. Combining…

A guide to the fish that have the lowest and highest levels of mercury
We all know that eating fish is good for you, and here on Martha's Vineyard we are lucky to have access to some of the freshest, most beautiful fish in the world. We also know that there are high levels of mercury in some fish due to pollution, which can be dangerous – especially for pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant. The National Resources Defense Council has released a guide to levels of mercury fish. The Information is based on averages from the Federal Drug Administration’s (FDA) test results for mercury in fish and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) determination of safe levels of mercury for women of reproductive age. LEAST MERCURY Anchovies Butterfish Catfish Clam Crab (Domestic) Crawfish/Crayfish Croaker (…
