The four-day Festival of Arts and Ideas takes over the Harbor View starting today
Over 20 arts organizations and business from across the Island came together with over a dozen individuals to create Art*Island – a festival celebrating the vitality of the arts on our highly creative Island. The festival will be the culmination of Fall for the Arts, a month-long Cape and Islands campaign highlighting our creative community. The weekend’s events begin on October 24th and go through October 28th - all taking place at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown, which will be transformed into galleries, craft centers, dance theaters, film centers and even a ballroom. There will be events for the whole family, events just for kids and a couple of events just for the grown-ups as well. Here is a rundown of the weekend’s events: …

The Fall Festival of Poetry & Music will take place at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs this Saturday, October 20th. The event will feature the Island’s short list of poets who will read and discuss their work, followed by a light food and beverage social. Decadence in the Halls of Featherstone this weekend
When you think of chocolate, art doesn’t necessarily come to mind. Things like indulgence and late-night cravings are more like it. But after one visit to the Art of Chocolate Festival at Featherstone Center for the Arts, and you’ll be sure to add art to your list of chocolate definitions. The festival kicks into high gear on Saturday and Sunday with two tastes for $5 and five tastes for $10. These “tastes” are samples of some of the Island’s greatest chocolate sensations. Today and tomorrow you can explore the workspace of 17 Island artists
Last year, in celebration of Featherstone’s 15th anniversary, 15 Island artists opened the doors of their studios to any who wished to walk through the doors to see the space in which greatness is created. Due to last year’s success, Featherstone decided to hold another studio tour, this year allowing guests to visit 17 artists who will open their studios and showcase their artwork. Poet, professor and human rights activist Carolyn Forché read new poems from her upcoming book at Featherstone on Sunday evening.
As part of the Pathways-Featherstone Summer Festival of Poetry, Carolyn Forché shared several poems from her upcoming book on Sunday night. Forché first poetry collection, Gathering The Tribes (Yale University Press, 1976), won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award and has received numerous awards for her work ever since. On Sunday evening, she began with a poem about the Hook Lighthouse in Ireland. Her poems vary in subject and sentiment, but the common thread that holds her books together is her grandmother, Anna. "My grandmother must be in every book," explained Forché. Her grandmother, who died when Forché was 18 was extremely important and influential to Forché. Opera Weekend is sure to be an event Martha’s Vineyard will want to return to summer after summer. Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater with Opera Noire of New York’s production of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi premiers at Featherstone Center for the Arts on Friday August 3rd at 6 p.m and on Thursday, August 2nd, even the kids can get into the act. The weekend’s performances of Puccini’s one-hour comic masterpiece feature a cast of singers who won their roles during a lengthy audition process in New York City and, along with the artistic staff, are a world-class ensemble. The annual Summer Poetry Festival at Featherstone started the season with an event featuring three poets laureate from West Tisbury and Edgartown.
The Pathways - Featherstone Summer Festival of Poetry hosted three poets laureate under the summer tent at Featherstone Center for the Arts last night. Featherstone’s Executive Director, Ann Smith, explained that this was a huge event for Featherstone since it includes local poets. "West Tisbury has been on the track for some time now. They really set the tone for the Poets Laureate," she said. Local poets laureate Fan Ogilvie and Justen Ahren have been coordinating the summer poetry festival for the past seven years. Ahren, West Tisbury's newest poet laureate explained, "We always like to throw in some local poets and this year because there's poet laureates in several of the towns, we decided to do a poets laureate reading.” The …

First time book illustrator Sabrina Kuchta celebrates this milestone at a book launch party at Featherstone on Sunday
Twenty-two year old Sabrina Kuchta spent her summers studying art at Featherstone Center for the Arts. Sunday afternoon she returns to Featherstone to celebrate the completion of her first book illustration, "Where Horses Fly" at a book launch party in the Pebble Gallery. A recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Sabrina Kuchta is already experiencing success. After majoring in Illustration for Children's Books, Kuchta was approached by Vineyard Stories publisher Jan Pogue and author, Jacqui Boulter about illustrating "Where Horses Fly." The children's book is about a girl who visits her grandparents in Martha's Vineyard and takes a magical ride on the Flying Horses carousel. "I think the story is so inspiring so it was fun …

Last night the Martha's Vineyard Museum in Edgartown had their summer opening reception. Everyone was invited to join the opening of two new exhibits: The Island Faces Portrait Competition and the Hands-on History space. The Island Faces Portrait Competition, done with Featherstone Center for the Arts, showcases 19 artists whose portraits were selected out of 60 entries. Assistant Curator, Anna Carringer, explains, " We were really surprised by how many we got and the fact that they were all brilliant too." Carringer explained that the guidelines to enter the competition were intentionally vague because the museum has never done this before.
