Sold in Chilmark: 1 Bed, 1 Bath, $1.3 Million

The land's the thing, of course: Nearly nine acres off North Road in rural up-Island Martha's Vineyard.

A Florida man last month spent $1.3 million on a two-story home in Chilmark with one bedroom and one bathroom in less than 1,000 square feet of living space built in 1997. The house at 129 Old Farm Road may not be large, but the lot is 8.79 acres, according to the Trulia real estate website. The property is located southeast of North Road at Mill Brook Lane. We'll Be Nicer, Chilmark Official Says

Frustration and resentment have boiled over into harsh language more than once at Chilmark human resources board meetings, riling the community. Selectman Bill Rossi says it's not going to happen any more.

An ongoing disagreement between Chilmark selectmen and the town's advisory human resources board over the part-time beach supervisor and her job requirements has given birth to a separate controversy. Harsh, personal language and profanities during human resources board meetings in February were recorded and released to a member of the town's beach committee, after which transcripts — inaccurate, meeting participants say — were posted at Alley's General Store and the Menemsha Texaco for all to read. The posted typescripts contained "quotes that are not in the tapes," said town counsel Ron Rappaport at Tuesday night's selectmen's meeting, which drew a capacity crowd of more than two dozen town residents and Island reporters. "Some of those …

Cliff Collapses at Lucy Vincent Beach

Take a look at what the weather's fury has done to this iconic Chilmark beach, in our brand-new video and a gallery of photos showing the progress of the cliff's erosion and the violence of the storms that have assailed it.

This has been a rough winter for Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark. Already walloped by Hurricane Sandy last October, an eroded cliff above the beach caved in on itself during the most recent ocean storm last week. Saturday afternoon, a steady stream of visitors made their way to the beach to see where chunks of what had been clifftop now litter the shoreline. Most of the sightseers stayed on the sand, but one child couldn't resist climbing the wreckage even though the cliff continues to crumble. For a letter to the editor responding to this article, please see Erosion is Inevitable at Lucy Vincent, Gay Head Cliffs. Menemsha Coast Guard Station Faces Sequestration Cuts

But Dukes County's only Coast Guard station will remain open regardless of federal budget cuts, said officer in charge Jason Olsen.

The United States Coast Guard would see a direct impact if the automatic spending cuts under sequestration go into effect on Friday. But the Coast Guard station on Martha's Vineyard won't close its doors, officer in charge Jason Olsen said Thursday. "Station Menemsha will still be running," said Olsen, adding that there are 26 men living at the station. It is the only Coast Guard facility in Dukes County. Lt. Paul D. Rhynard of the Coast Guard Office of Public Affairs said he is being cautious in discussing what effect sequestration might have on the service. However, he said that local officers like Olsen will be given "a certain amount of flexibility" in implementing bidget cuts if sequestration takes place. "Nobody knows beter what …
