There's a virtual Vineyard on Facebook with lively, engaging and photo-filled posts from local businesses and groups. Here are some MV Patch favorites and recommendations from readers.
Since we first published this article March 28, I've found a whole crop of new Vineyard-related Facebook pages to follow. Here are just a few. Please share your own Facebook favorites in the comments section below! Heather Gardens Greenhouses and Nursery has a sassy, wry Facebook presence that has me looking forward to new posts, especially because they usually come with luscious photographs of plants and gardens. Sample updates: Vineyard Grocer and Tisbury Farm Market share a lively Facebook page maintained by TFM manager Steve Harris, with daily specials and nutrition tips. WCAI-FM in Woods Hole posts enough items of Island interest, including links to program archives and alerts to upcoming shows, that I'm always interested in the …

What do you think of the massive project now underway to move the Schifter house and other buildings 300 feet further back from the crumbling Wasque bluff on Chappaquiddick? Tell us in the comments.
In an engineering project of a scale and complexity unlike any previously known on Martha's Vineyard, the Schifter home and outbuildings on Chappaquiddick are being moved away from their precarious site on an eroding bluff at Wasque. The owners had to clear a series of municipal hurdles to receive all the permissions they needed to undertake the four-month moving project, which has brought cranes and many trucks to Chappy along with some equipment so large it had to be barged to the island. A detailed, day-by-day chronicle of the Schifter compound's increasingly eroded position, and the monumental effort to save the lavish home and its associated buildings, can be found on the Chappy Ferry Facebook page complete with dozens of photos and …

Starting in May, small ships from American Cruise Lines will be anchoring outside Edgartown Harbor on their coastal trips, harbormaster Charlie Blair said.
It's been a long time since cruise ships anchored in Edgartown. But this summer, the town can expect more than 20 visits from small ships operated by American Cruise Lines of Guilford, Conn. In past summers, American Cruise ships have visited Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, said Edgartown harbormaster Charlie Blair. "I stole 'em," Blair said Friday, shortly after confirming the switch with an American Cruise Lines representative. "The selectmen gave their blessing last month," Blair continued. The ships, up to 215 feet long and carrying about 100 passengers, will drop their hooks in the anchorage off Chappaquiddick and run their own launches to the shore, he said. "They drop people off and pick people up." While onshore, cruise passengers …

For the second day in a row, Chappy Ferry service was suspended temporarily and Beach Road was closed to traffic due to flooding from an extra-high tide.
Boats floated above submerged docks in Edgartown Friday morning as the third high tide of a strong ocean storm sent water flooding into harborside streets and parking lots. The Chappy Ferry suspended service temporarily and Beach Road between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown was closed to traffic. For more about the storm, including the latest information on cancellations and road closures, please see Martha's Vineyard Storm Center. Do you have photos or videos from the storm? Post them here. The first of three high tides in this ocean storm forced the cancellation of the Chappy Ferry and swamped parts of downtown Edgartown.
Chappy Ferry service was suspended Thursday morning as the first of three stormy high tides battered the coastline with waves and wind. Rain became heavy as the tide ebbed, and by midmorning the precipitation appeared to be changing to wet snow in Edgartown. For updates on Chappy and Steamship Authority ferry service and other storm-related news, please see our Martha's Vineyard Storm Center: March 7-8, 2013. In this video recorded shortly after high tide Thursday morning, you can see the Memorial Wharf and Edgartown Yacht Club public parking lots under water as waves lap against the side of the Seafood Shanty. Click here to see a video of the approaching storm in Menemsha, East Chop and Oak Bluffs Wednesday afternoon. Two more high tides …

The rain and wind are already tuning up, with heavy winds and coastal flooding expected to storm the Vineyard, according to the National Weather Service.
Martha's Vineyard can expect more high winds and potentially destructive flooding on Thursday and Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory, a coastal flood warning and a hazardous weather outlook for Dukes County. "A strong ocean storm will bring strong winds to Block Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket tonight through Thursday night," according to the NWS. A coastal flood warning remains in effect from 5 a.m. Thursday though 10 a.m. Friday. Coastal flooding and severe beach erosion is likely during the high tides from Thursday morning to Friday morning, the NWS said in their warning statement: "The storm surge is projected to be 2.5 to 3 feet at most East Coast locations from Thursday morning though Friday …

The Vineyard Gazette's Mark Alan Lovewell reports the discovery of a dead dolphin on Chappaquiddick that, according to a marine expert from the New England Aquarium, is not one of the two common dolphins spotted swimming in Chappy waters last week.
"It's nature's way, of course. Still, we're glad this poor fellow isn't one of the two we got to know last week down at the Dike Bridge," commented the Chappy Ferry Facebook page Monday, referring to a report by the Vineyard Gazette's Mark Alan Lovewell. A pair of common dolphins gave nature-watchers some excitement this week, cruising the waters of Chappaquiddick.
Did you see the dolphins? A pair of common dolphins was spotted cruising around Chappaquiddick this week, giving nature-lovers a thrill. "Saw these guys swimming around Dike Bridge yesterday morning- Pretty special way to start the day," posted Slip Away Farm on Facebook Friday morning. Chappy Ferry posted, We have seen dolphins in Edgartown Harbor, but only in the summer and early fall. The opening through Norton Point Beach has allowed many exotic fish (even whales) to enter Katama Bay from the Atlantic all year-round. But there is no direct access from Norton Point to Pogue or Poucha ponds. These dolphins must have entered through the gut, swum a good distance around the pond, found the narrow channel down to the Dike Bridge, and then …

Indeed, poetry is one of the life blood streams of Martha's Vineyard. That is why the producers of the films, the video director of the live Valentine's Day broadcast, right down to the designer of the graphic of the MVPS' logo are all of Martha's Vineyard Public Broadcasting Station's staff. "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." #ArsGratiaArtis   more ›
