Free Movie Friday: "A Christmas Story" at Alex's Place

Kick off school vacation with Jean Shepherd's classic and hilarious holiday tale, showing free Friday night on the big screen at Alex's Place at the Y.

Island schools let out for vacation Friday, and Alex's Place at the Y has a great way for teens to celebrate their holiday freedom: A free screening of the classic family comedy "A Christmas Story."

Set in the 1940s, the 1983 film is based on tales by American storyteller Jean Shepherd and centers around young Ralphie's Christmas wish for a Red Ryder BB rifle. A leg-shaped lamp also makes its appearance to complicate the holiday.

Alex's Place posts on Patch:

"Shown in The Base theater space, the film recounts a hilarious romp through the holidays with a family many will recognize. The film will be shown on the large screen with full stereo sound. Great holiday snacks will be available."

Showtime is 7 p.m., admission is free and adults are welcome, too, according to Alex's Place.
