Community Corner

Peace Concert at Star of the Sea, Santa at the Black Dog

Five things to look forward to on the Vineyard as Christmas approaches.

1. Join the Y: Monday, Public Registration Opens for Winter Programs at the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard. Stop by the member service desk to register for all your favorite Y activities.

2. Lift your spirits: This year's Reflections of Peace Concert, an annual benefit for Hospice of Martha's Vineyard, starts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs. In its 17th year, the privately-funded concert traditionally is a celebration of the spirit of community, with performances of time-honored as well as new pieces by a number of musicians. Your $20 admission fee goes directly to support the services Hospice provides for free.

3. Teens eat free: All teens are welcome @ Alex's Place for a homemade meal and a great movie shown on the 10-foot screen. Friday, 7 p.m. at the YMCA of MV, free.

4. Kids play, you shop: Drop your kids off at the Y to finish some last minute shopping! Ages 3+. $20/child, $15/siblings. Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the YMCA of MV.

5. Photos with Santa: At the Second Annual Sunday with Santa at The Black Dog you can have your picture taken with Santa inside the Black Dog Tavern between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., immediately followed by a tree lighting, caroling with the Minnesingers, Ornament decorating for kids, free cookies, hot chocolate and cider and dockside tours of the Tall Ship Alabama (weather permitting). Black Dog Tavern, 21 Beach St. Ext., Vineyard Haven.
