New Year's Week on Martha's Vineyard: What's Happening?

Five things to do and know on the Island as we prepare to ring out 2013 and welcome the New Year.

1. The National Weather Service predicts a sunny, breezy Monday with a high near 41 and west winds 14 to 20 miles per hour. Temperatures will plummet overnight to bring a chillier Tuesday with a high near 31, a slight chance of snow and a north wind becoming westerly in the afternoon, forecasters say. New Year's Day is expected to be blustery and partly sunny, with a high near 28 and a chance of snow beginning overnight and lasting through Friday, according to the NWS.

2. The Monday Open Playgroup at the Martha's Vineyard Community Services Family Center runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 100 Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs. More info: 508 693-7900 x283 or

3. Monday's special at Menemsha Fish Market is a cold lobster roll with New England clam chowder for $9.99 plus tax. The market on Basin Road, Chilmark is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with the possible exception of some Wednesdays: Call 508-645-2282.

4. Tuesday, it's New Year's Eve at Harbor View Hotel with gourmet hors d’oeuvres by Executive Chef Nathan Gould, live music by the Sultans of Swing and the Mike Benjamin Band and a midnight champagne toast on Harbor View’s wrap-around porch as fireworks erupt over Edgartown Harbor. $95 per person, doors open 9 p.m.

5. If you'd rather ring in the New Year with the rocking blues of Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, a trio version of the band plays the Katherine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven Tuesday at 7 p.m. Hoy promises on Facebook that the audience will be able to dance.
