Monday Essentials: Illumination Night, the Fair and Fireworks

It's the biggest week of the summer on Martha's Vineyard: Here's why.

Small wonder the Obamas chose this week for their vacation: Summer on Martha's Vineyard reaches its peak over the next seven days, with Illumination Night Wednesday, the Agricultural Fair Thursday through Sunday and the Oak Bluffs fireworks Friday night.

Here are five things you won't want to miss on the Vineyard this week:

  1. Free Beach Yoga, Monday, 7 a.m., Inkwell Beach, Oak Bluffs: Yoga teacher Martha Abbott leads this class presented as part of a festival series assisting cancer patients and their families. More info: www.summersoulmv.com.
  2. Edgartown House Tour, Tuesday, 1 p.m. (lecture), 2 p.m. (tour): $35 to visit five historic Edgartown homes, includes tea. Sponsored by the Federated Church.
  3. On Wednesday, pre-Illumination Night events are taking place at 3 p.m.: at the Vineyard Haven Public Library you can paint your own paper lantern and the Oak Bluffs Public Library has a party with lanterns, refreshments and lights-out at 4 p.m. to watch the colors glow. Head over to the Tabernacle for the Grand Illumination starting at 7:30 p.m.
  4. The 152nd Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society Fair begins Thursday, which is also improv comedy night at Alex's Place at the Y, where the IMP youth comedy troupe will make you laugh starting at 8 p.m.: $11 youth, $15 adults.
  5. Friday, the annual Oak Bluffs fireworks show begins with an 8 p.m. band concert in Ocean Park.
