Dense Fog, Cold Snap, Free Movie

Five things to know and do this week on Martha's Vineyard: Updated with concert information for the band The Martha's Vineyard Ferries.

1. The National Weather Service has a dense fog advisory in effect for the Cape and Islands until 10 a.m. Visibility could be down to a quarter of a mile at times, says the NWS, which cautions motorists to leave extra time for the morning commute, "as objects on and near roadways will be seen only at close range." Monday's warm wave, when temperatures may reach the 50s and rain is expected in the afternoon, will soon be followed by another cold snap: According to the NWS, Tuesday's temperatures will be in the mid-20s with partly sunny, blustery conditions.

2. Author Ed Merck will speak about his new book, "Sailing the Mystery: My Journey into Life's Remaining Chapters, Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Public Library. Free.

3. The OBPD is also showing a free movie Thursday at 6 p.m.: It's a Documentary film about a culinary course taught by Wilma Stephenson in Northeast Philadelphia.

4. ADDED: The band The Martha's Vineyard Ferries has a show Thursday at the Katherine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven, with Jellybone Rivers opening: 7 p.m., $5.

5. Friday night, Alex's Place at the Y hosts another Middle School Dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. All kids in grades 6, 7, 8 are welcome: $5.
