All eyes will be on the boys basketball team this evening when they face off against Norwell in the first round of state playoffs. The game, part of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
The second-seed Vineyarders are on a hot streak right now and favored to perform well in their division. In February, they were crowned Eastern Athletic Conference champs. Last week, they ended their season with a 17-3 record. The team hasn’t lost a home game this year.
Victory is of course elusive, but the talented squad displayed their resilience last week in the face of tough competition.
Down 19 points against at the end of the first half, it appeared the Vineyarders would suffer their first home loss in their last official game of the season. Instead, the team rebounded in the third quarter, narrowing the gap within minutes.
The February 23 game ended in the Vineyarders’ favor, 70 to 61, with senior Randall Jette racking up 25 points in the second half. Junior Peter Keaney scored 10 of his total 20 points and senior T.J. Vangervan all eight of his points in the final two quarters.
If the Vineyarders win this evening, they will face off against either Wareham or Apponequet in the quarter finals on Friday.
Look for a recap of the game on Patch Thursday morning.
