The Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah has announced that it has earned federal approval to open a casino on Martha's Vineyard, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday, followed by Patch and other area media.

The article "Wampanoag tribe says it has federal approval to build casino on Martha’s Vineyard" goes on to report that tribal leaders say they will begin with a temporary casino at the site of an unfinished community center.

Tribal leader Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, who is facing an election this weekend, was traveling Tuesday and unavailable by phone, said the tribe's Linda Scott, who was answering many calls following the Globe report. Andrews-Maltais's voicemail was not accepting new messages. Patch has sent her an email requesting an interview or statement.
