Obama's Chilmark Neighbors to Face Checkpoints
"Local traffic is permitted on most of South Road. The road will be closed from Meeting House Road to Wooton Bassett Road. Only residents of that area will be allowed past the check points," announces the town of Chilmark.
Only residents will be permitted on a portion of South Road in Chilmark where President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are staying during their Vineyard vacation, according to a town announcement issued Wednesday morning. (See Obama Visits Martha's Vineyard: 9-Day Road Closure Planned.)
"The proposal is to close South Road to through traffic for the duration of the President's stay Aug 10 - 18," reads the Chilmark announcement, which continues:
"Local traffic is permitted on most of South Road. The road will be closed from Meeting House Road to Wooton Bassett Road. Only residents of that area will be allowed past the check points."
The announcement called the planned road closure an "active and changing situation."
