Obama Vacation, Day 2: More Golf, Cocktails with Friends

After a second day of golf, President Barack Obama joined First Lady Michelle Obama for drinks with former NPR host Michelle Norris Johnson and her husband, Obama campaign advisor Broderick Johnson, at the couple's summer home in West Tisbury.

From pool reports:

Under grey skies and scattered showers, the Presidential motorcade headed down-Island at 11:50 a.m Monday, arriving at the Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown just after 12 pm.

The motorcade passed a very wet biker on South Road and a runner paused in front of the Grey Barn Farm and Dairy to let the motorcade pass. Greeters waived on the porch of Alley's General Store.

The White House announced Monday morning that the President received his daily briefing from National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice.

The private Vineyard Golf Club is the only organic golf course in the country, with a sustainable maintenance program that does not include pesticides.

On his first return visit to the course since 2011, President was joined by longtime seasonal Vineyard visitor and regular Obama golf partner Vernon Jordan, Ambassador Ron Kirk, and Allison Davis, a Chicago developer and attorney.

The steady morning rain cleared just as the President and his golfing party arrived around noon.

After nearly five hours of golfing at Vineyard Golf Club, President Obama headed back up-Island to his Chilmark residence. The motorcade left the course at 4:45 p.m. (see video).

Motorists passing by slowed at the entrance to the course over the course of the afternoon, hoping to catch a glimpse of the motorcade. Some stopped to take pictures along the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road bike path.

The motorcade left the South Road residence under clearing skies at 5:45 pm, arriving just before 6 pm. at the West Tisbury summer home of former National Public Radio host Michele Norris Johnson and her husband Broderick Johnson, a campaign advisor to the President.

Michele Norris and her family have been coming to the Vineyard for over 20 years.

In an interview with the Vineyard Gazette in 2011, she said the family enjoys beach days at Long Point, swims at Seth's Pond in West Tisbury and biking. Her memoir, "The Grace of Silence," was sparked by eavesdropping on conversations about race after the President's election in 2008. Ms. Norris was the former cohost of "All Things Considered" on NPR, but stepped down after her husband joined the campaign.

The President and First Lady left the home of Michele Norris Johnson and Broderick Johnson at 7:25, pm heading back home to South Road in Chilmark. They arrived back at their residence for the night just after 7:30 p.m.

The sun revealed itself for the first time Monday just as the President's day came to a close, setting behind a thin strip of clouds with a brilliant pink and purple hue.
