Oak Bluffs Asphalt Silo Coming Down, Report Says

The Martha's Vineyard Times is reporting that the Oak Bluffs asphalt plant has agreed to dismantle a 75-foot-tall silo it erected in 2011, replacing it with a smaller version.

A controversial asphalt silo that has had its Oak Bluffs neighbors complaining about odors and emissions will be dismantled this summer following an agreement with the town zoning board of appeals, according to a report from the Martha's Vineyard Times.

The 75-foot-tall asphalt storage tower at the White Brothers-Lynch Corporation plant is to be replaced by a 48-foot facility similar to one in use before the larger silo was built in 2011, the newspaper reports.

The plant was the topic of a recent letter to the Patch editor by Oak Bluffs resident Richard Fried, who wrote "The asphalt tower that was erected is much higher than the trees and was erected without a town permit. It also violates local zoning laws."
