Liquor Licenses Sought by Menemsha Restaurants

Should Chilmark go "wet"? Selectmen hold a public hearing Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Chilmark selectmen hold a public hearing Tuesday to discuss whether the town should license restaurants to serve alcohol.

The hearing stems from an Aug. 5 letter to the selectmen from Bob and Sarah Nixon, owners of the Home Port Restaurant, Beach Plum Inn & Restaurant and Menemsha Inn & Cottages.

"We are looking to enhance the Home Port Restaurant and the Beach Plum Inn & Restaurant by providing our guests the ability to purchase alcohol directly from the restaurants. Currently, our guests bring their own alcohol on a "BYOB" basis," the Nixons wrote

According to the Vineyard Gazette, the town can file a home rule petition with the state to place the matter of local liquor licenses before town voters, who have a special town meeting Sept. 30. Read "Chilmark Will Consider Allowing Alcohol Sales at Restaurants."

Tuesday's public hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the selectmen's meeting room.

Do you support the Nixons in their desire to serve alcohol at the Home Port and Beach Plum? Or do you think Chilmark should remain "dry?" Tell us in the comments.
