  • Candidates: Ron DiOrio, Duncan Ross, Michael Santoro, Abraham Seiman and Walter Vail
  • Choose: Two
  • Term: Three years
  • Two incumbents, Ron DiOrio and Duncan Ross, face off against three challengers in what is arguably the most contested race on the Island this political season. Each candidate is seeking to prove that he is the most capable to help the town regain financial stability after years of budget shortfalls and trying times still ahead. DiOrio is chairman of the Oak Bluffs affordable housing committee, a past president of Habitat for Humanity on Martha's Vineyard and a five-year incumbent. Ross is a retired longtime teacher at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School; former town moderator, president of Friends of Oak Bluffs and member of several town committees and commissions; and a two-term incumbent. Santoro is a partner at Season's Pub & Eatery and the Lookout Tavern and member of the Oak Bluffs Business Association. Seiman is a longtime summer resident who moved to the Island full-time last year. He is a former health care facilities executive who has also spent time teaching and in social work. Vail is a longtime summer resident who moved to the Island three years ago, a former vice-president of Merrill Lynch and mortgage company president, a director of the Martha's Vineyard Housing Fund and a self-described fiscal conservative.

  • The spotlight has shined hotly on the Edgartown Library Trustees this year as they worked to formulate a plan for a new library design. Voters at the Edgartown Annual Town Meeting on Tuesday unanimously voted to approve their plan, which would relocate the library to a new building at the site of the Old Edgartown School. But along the way there has been drama and dissension as to how best to formulate a plan that would satisfy the trustee's and town's needs while qualifying for grant money to fund the project.

WEST TISBURY

Time and location: , noon to 8 p.m.

Race to watch: Finance committee

  • Candidates: Joseph Gervais, Gary Montrowl, Katherine Traintafillou
  • Choose: Two
  • Term: Three years
  • It may have been named the race to watch regardless, but it's also the only race to watch in this year's West Tisbury election. Three challengers will vie for two spots on the finance committee, which on Tuesday pitched a battle at the Annual Town Meeting seeking to reduce the Up-Island Regional School District budget.
