Ban Requested on Boat Sewage in Island Coastal Waters

State submitted application to EPA for No Discharge Area along coast of Cape and Islands

The state of Massachusetts has asked that the waters along the coast of Cape Cod and the Islands be designated for a ban on waste discharges from boats.

According to the My Fox Boston website, “State officials submitted an application on Monday for a No Discharge Area to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. If approved, vessels would be prohibited from dumping any boat sewage - treated or untreated - into the 807-square-mile area off the coast.”

There would be temporary exceptions for treated waste from the ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
