Aquinnah Ousts Incumbent Selectman

Beverly Wright has defeated Camille Rose for a three-year seat on the Aquinnah selectmen.

Aquinnah voters ousted two-term incumbent selectmen Camille Rose in favor of Beverly Wright at Wednesday's town elections. Wright, a former chair of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, earned 124 votes to Rose's 95.

The contest for the three-year term on the selectman was free of pointed jabs and barbs, as both longtime Aquinnah residents have been friends for more than 30 years. Rose told Patch prior to the election that she would bring a fresh set of eyes to review town affairs.

“I'll stop and listen," said Wright. "We have a new town manager and I want to get acclimated to the way things run, talk with the other two selectmen. My job is to give input based on conversation with the community.

“We need to establish more dialogue between year-round residents and seasonal residents—a blue-ribbon committee, perhaps. We have a bare-bones budget. If we need something we can't afford, let's see what seasonal residents think about [supporting] it.”
