Woman Injured at MV Airport Was Not Blown Over

Updated July 16: A woman who fell to the ground earlier this month at Martha's Vineyard Airport apparently fell over on her own and was not blasted by a jet engine, as originally reported by a person at the scene.

At first it was thought that the engine of a passing jet aircraft blasted the outdoor arrival area where she was waiting, according to an Edgartown summer resident who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.

"She was lying on the path wailing and crying," said Elizabeth Balay, who was at the airport at about 10:20 a.m. to pick up an arriving friend.

Balay, arrived as airport emergency personnel were calling for an ambulance and assisting the injured woman.

"She was in a lot of distress. She was really in a lot of pain and probably in shock, too," Balay said.

Arriving passengers were detoured to the gate near the playground, Balay said.

Airport management was not immediately available to speak with MV Patch about the accident and the victim's condition, and did not return phone messages.

However, Balay herself followed up at the airport last week, speaking with one of the EMTs who said the victim apparently was standing on the rocker and fell on her own
