13 Swimmers Rescued off Norton Point, Cyclist Injured on Katama Road

The injured cyclist was taken to Mass General by ambulance because Medflight was grounded by weather conditions, the Vineyard Gazette reports. The rescued swimmers were unhurt, reports the Martha's Vineyard Times.

A reported 13 people swimming in three groups were rescued from the surf off of Edgartown's Norton Point Wednesday afternoon, reports the Martha's Vineyard Times.

Strong currents flowing from Katama Bay to the ocean apparently swept the swimmers away from the beach, the Times reports.

In the nearby Katama area of Edgartown, a bicyclist was taken to Martha's Vineyard Hospital and then by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries after he was trapped under a garbage truck that had turned into his path as he rode on the bike trail Wednesday afternoon, reports the Vineyard Gazette.

The driver of the truck was cited for failing to yield at an intersection, the Gazette reports.
