UPDATED: Helicopter Search, School Lockdown Follow Report of Gunman in Chilmark

Island police and two State Police helicopters searched for a man with a gun who allegedly assaulted another man near the town's school Tuesday afternoon. An Oak Bluffs hunter later gave himself up and was arrested.

A report of a man with a gun in Chilmark Tuesday afternoon had police searching the area with the assistance of two Massachusetts State Police helicopters. 

Sgt. Jeff Stone of the State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs said the report was of an armed man who assaulted another man near the Chilmark school. The aircraft, out of the State Police Air Wing in Plymouth, were sent to the Island at about 2:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m., all Chilmark police were busy with the search, according to a dispatcher with the Dukes County Communications Center.

Chilmark School was locked down, with students confined to the building as the police search continued past normal dismissal time, reports the Martha's Vineyard Times.

Schoolchildren were released at about 3 p.m. as West Tisbury and Aquinnah police helped with the search, the Vineyard Gazette reports.
