What a Bunch of Turkeys!

Wild turkeys: We've got 'em.

When I was growing up in Edgartown, the only "turkeys" we saw were tourists driving the wrong way. But Paul and I had only been back on-Island for a couple of days last week when we and my mother had to arrest our driving progress in order to convenience the up-Island flock seen in this photo.

Mom and other Islanders have told me the big birds, long associated with holiday platters, can be a hazard when at large. One Facebooker posted on the MVPatch page: "Those turkeys cost me over $2,000 when I had my accident trying to avoid hitting them on the side of the road last year!"
