Historian Sheldon Hackney, 79, Dies on Martha's Vineyard

The former president of Tulane University and the University of Pennsylvania died Thursday of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), reports the Vineyard Gazette.

A distinguished scholar passed away at his Vineyard Haven home Thursday: The Vineyard Gazette is reporting the death at 79 of historian Sheldon Hackney, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS and Lou Gehrig's disease.

According to NOLA.com, Hackney was president of Tulane University from 1975 to 1980 before becoming president of the University of Pennsylvania and serving as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities during the Clinton administration.
