Weekend Planner: November 12-13

This weekend enjoy community poets, two winter walks, free admission to the museum and, of course, wings!!

Free Admission for Islanders

The has announced it will offer free admission or pay what you can to Vineyard residents every Saturday beginning on November 5th and continuing until spring. Current exhibitions included in the free admission are: Out of the Depths: Martha's Vineyard Shipwrecks, Eisenstaedt and Us, and We Are Marching Along: Martha's Vineyard and the Civil War. Visitors can also see permanent exhibitions including the original Fresnel Lens from the Gay Head Lighthouse, a carriage shed of vehicles and vessels, an interactive kids' space, and an exhibition on the Wampanoags.

Wing Fest 2011

On Saturday, from noon to 3 pm, it’s at in Edgartown. Come out for all you can eat wings, a cash bar and live local music. The last two years have gone to the Edgartown Fireman's Association who will be defending their title against all those who show up with their best sauces. Vote for your favorites, as the winning sauce will be featured on the Sharky’s menu until next year’s contest. 21 and older event Admission is $25.

Winter Walks

There is a Winter Walk Saturday at 10 a.m. at . According to the Polly Hill website, “Gorgeous bark patterns and architectural structure become evident as our deciduous trees lose their leaves and our conifers stand out with their many textures and shades of green. Showy fruits and even some flowers add to our winter landscape.” Meet at the visitor center and come dressed appropriately. Free. For more information, call 508-693-9426.

On Sunday at 1:30 pm, the Vineyard Conservation Society begins its winter walk program with an interpretative hike around the moors, beaches and heathlands of Aquinnah’s Moshup Trail. For more information, visit vineyardconservation.org or call 508-693-9588.

Vineyard Tennis Center Annual Turkey Open

It’s the Sixteenth annual Turkey Open all weekend long at . All proceeds go to Doctors without Borders. Mixed Doubles for all levels. Play best of three sets! Super tie breaker third set. Guaranteed two matches. $60 per player $50 for juniors. For more information, call 508-696-8000.

Community Poetry Reading

Venture Forth Tender Souls! s happens on Sunday at 4pm. This annual Community Poetry Reading features community members reading their own poems and/or the poems of others. Help keep the tradition alive by attending as a reader or a listener or both! As always, numbers will be drawn from a hat to determine the reading order. Refreshments served. Free & open to the public.

This year’s Community Poetry Reading doubles as the kick-off for the new nominations process. Do you know of someone who would make a great poet laureate? Who will be next? Learn more about the nominations process at the reading. Nominations will be accepted from January 3 till February 1, 2012.
