Juliette Kayyem releases The Opportunity of Climate Change
BOSTON – Gubernatorial candidate Juliette Kayyem released The Opportunity of Climate Change, which is her plan to combat the challenges of climate change, while capitalizing on the opportunity of investing in the clean tech industry. The plan centers around the creation of Green Banks, which through credit enhancement, risk reduction, and new financing programs can increase private investment into the clean tech industry.
“We must stop debating the science of climate change and start embracing solutions that can engage all our citizens, protect our communities, promote jobs, and expand economic opportunities.” Kayyem stated.
Juliette, the Commonwealth’s first Undersecretary for Homeland Security under Governor Deval Patrick, has overseen the response of state entities such as the National Guard to natural disasters.
“Having seen firsthand the disastrous effects that heightened storms and rising sea levels can have on communities, I am dedicated to continuing the tremendous progress led by this administration to fight for Massachusetts’ goal of 25% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 and 80% reduction by 2050.” Kayyem stated.
While serving as President Obama’s Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, Juliette managed the efforts of 5 Governors, dozens of local leaders, and over 60 federal agencies in the response and cleanup of the Gulf Coast following the BP oil spill. Juliette’s work during this response demonstrated that government action can motivate communities.
“While the effects of climate change, including changing temperatures, rising sea levels, varying precipitation, and increased extreme weather, pose a serious threat to Massachusetts, they also offer an opportunity to invest in our economy. The Massachusetts clean tech industry is continuing to grow, but political dysfunction in Washington has put its sustained growth for our state in limbo. We must stand up and ensure the clean tech sector doesn’t falter.” Kayyem stated. “We must create Green Banks, which can provide financial levers to motivate private investment into this industry.”
