SHARKS ARE NEW CHAMPIONS OF THE FUTURES LEAGUE!!!

The Martha's Vineyard Sharks were able to defeat the Nashua Silver Knights 6-3 to win the championship of the Futures Collegiate League! The Sharks become the only team to win the championship, aside from the Silver Knights, who were the 2-time defending champions.

Matt Timoney (Harvard) took the mound for the Sharks and, while he gave up 11 hits through 6 innings, was able to limit the damage and only allow 2 runs. The Sharks got off to a quick start, with 1 and 2 runs in the 1st two innings, respectively. A Nik Campero (UMASS) single drove in the first run of the night for the Sharks. In the 2nd inning, Dylan Tice was able to crush a ball to right-field that wasn't able to be brought in by Sean Lyons (Northeastern) and the Sharks were able to plate 3 and bring the score to 4-0. However, Nashua was able to hang around and chip away at the lead.

In the 3rd inning, back-to-back singles from Karl Kapinos (Palm Beach Atlantic) and Lyons cut the lead to 4-2. Neither team would be able to score again until the 7th inning, with one run apiece coming in the inning. Jimmy Ricoy (UMASS Lowell) ripped a double that scored another Silver Knights' run. The Sharks countered with a sacrifice fly from Campero that made the score 5-3.

The Sharks were able to push across an insurance run in the 8th on a Brett Holmgren (Endicott) single that was misplayed by the Silver Knights. Matt Calamoneri (Scranton) was able to come into the game for the Sharks, and as he has done all season, close out the game and make the Sharks the 2013 champions!

Dylan Tice (IUP) received the postseason MVP award to follow up his MVP of the entire season. A great all-around summer for the Sharks allowed them to become the champions this summer. Special thank you to all the volunteers, workers, donors, and host families that made this possible!! See you again next summer!
