We take Thanksgiving seriously here in the state where it was invented. Even the Vineyard Transit Agency is idling its buses for one of two VTA holidays in the year.

So if you're planning your holiday, make sure to get your shopping and errands done in advance, because on Thanksgiving Day you'll find ... 

  • Municipal, state, federal offices and banks: Closed.
  • Retail stores and supermarkets: Closed. 
  • Liquor stores: Closed. 
  • Post offices: Closed, no mail delivery.
  • Convenience stores: Open at owner's discretion.  
  • Bars and restaurants: Open at owner's discretion, including:
Harbor View Hotel, Edgartown, buffet 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., $59 adults/$25 children 12 and under: 508-627-3761
l'etoile, Edgartown, 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., bar closed: 508-627-5187
Lucky Hank's, Edgartown, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., $45 adults/$25 children 11 and under: 508-939-4082
Sharky's, Oak Bluffs, noon to 1:30 a.m.: 508-693-7501
The Terrace at the Charlotte Inn, Edgartown, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.: 508-627-6227
  • Libraries and schools: Closed.
  • Gyms: Closed or reduced hours. 
  • Stock market: Closed.
  • Edgartown Cinemas: Open, showing "Frozen," "Deliveryman" and "Last Vegas." 
  • Martha's Vineyard Film Center: No screenings scheduled.
  • Vineyard Transit Agency: No buses.
  • Steamship Authority: Friday schedule: Last boat from Vineyard Haven 8:30 p.m., last boat from Woods Hole 9:45 p.m.
