Vineyard Men Stand in Support of Women's Rights

Last Saturday, Vineyard men took a stand against domestic violence on the Vineyard Haven sea wall.

Last Saturday, over 25 Island men took to the wall between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs to . The men-against domestic violence group called Vineyard-Men for Abuse Prevention (V-MAP) created the event to attract attention to the work they are doing on the Island.

The event created by V-MAP and CONNECT to end violence (CONNECT), a program of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, asked Island men to take stand on the sea wall holding a sign stating who they are standing for. On July 28th, participants held posters with the names of the women they were standing for. It was an extremely symbolic and moving gesture. Even as the last people were standing on the wall, dozens of cars drove by honking their horns and waving out the windows.

I was going to stand, I went there, but the wall appeared to be too high. Next time, have a ladder for old guys. Good cause

I know what William means. I am also an old guy and it wasn't easy getting up on the wall. My sign went flying in the wind, but Max Sherman -- the guy whose energy persuaded me to join in -- climbed down on the rocks to get it. Thanks, Max, for both things.

Wonderful and so encouraging to see men standing up against violence against women like this. This is as it should be.

A great opportunity to dress up a bit and boogie on top of a wall for a few hours...seriously (but not solemnly) a very good turnout & the level of response from passers by was very encouraging - ordinary folk engaged quickly with the issue. nd Michael "I am also an old guy"...you and me both mate but doing this helps keep us young so good on you.

Sadly, I was not able to get back on island in time for the event. I was a bit depressed about missing it when I received a phone message from an island man I know who said he stood on the wall for me holding a card with my name on it. That news blew me away, brought tears to my eyes and touched me at the deepest level. Not only that, we had not been in touch for some time. This one solemn loving act of kindness was the first time in my life that a man has stood up FOR ME and said NO to the abuse. Although it happened so long ago the ripple effects of abuse (violence or sexual) can stay with you all your life, (even after many yrs of therapy) and affect not only a woman's confidence but her ability to trust life. I bless the man who stood up for me. I only wish I could have seen it with my own eyes. I shared the story of this even with friends around the globe. Everyone was deeply moved. Here is what one woman wrote back: " I believe that when we bless others, we also bless ourselves.  Do you know if they are going to hold this event annually?  It is a powerful event on so many levels.  It would be so magnificent to see in person.  National news coverage would be great for next year if it will be held again.  It touches my heart.  I am going to envision Wall Standings as such all around the world. ." With love and deep thanks to all the strong men who stood up and to all the brave women they came to stand up for..

I wanted to be on the island but thank you to all that took a stand. I stand tall for my sister in law Karla Pierson and my brother Robert Pierson they suffered and are both gone because no one took a stand.
