Not to put too fine a point on it, but Lee Mccormack is the first poet selected to be the island-wide poet laureate by William Waterway's Martha's Vineyard Poetry Society. There have been poet laureates for the town of West Tisbury for several years, beginning with Dan Waters, and since Dan, Fan Ogilvie and the current West Tisbury poet laureate, Justen Ahren. Meanwhile, in Edgartown, Steve Ewing is that town's first poet laureate. Lee Mccormack is a truly fine poet, one of the finest I have ever known, and I have known Lee -- and been his friend -- for more than 40 years. I am sure he would want this to be clarified, as he is always one to draw fine distinctions. That said, if you care about poetry, do not miss his very first appearance as poet laureate and and hear the shark poem commissioned by William Waterway and his Poetry Society. It is bound to be a wonderful occasion.
