Five Things You Need to Know Today: October 12

Today there is Farmers in Training at the Farm Institute, an Open Stage at Alex's Place at the YMCA and Ted Perry plays Musical Friday at the Newes

1. Farmers in Training takes place today at the Farm Institute for kids ages ten and up. Work with oxen-in-training, build farm structures and help with chores. Program runs through Nov. 16. $15 per session or $90 for the season. Snack included. 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm. For more information, call 508-627-7007.

2. Martha's Vineyard Film Society presents Jimmy Tingle Live on Stage and Screen with a screening of “Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream” followed by a discussion and comedy show with Jimmy Tingle tonight. $25/$35 VIP admission. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit mvfilmsociety.com.

3. There is an art opening for Lisa Vanderhoop this evening at Bank of Martha's Vineyard in Chilmark. Paintings, prints, and photographs will be on display through Nov. 2 and Vineyard Seadogs 2013 are for sale. For more information, call 508-645-3201.

4. Tonight at Alex's Place at the YMCA there is a Community Open Stage. All ages invited to perform music, dance, poetry and comedy. $5. 8 pm, signup in person at 6 pm or call 508-696-7171.

5. As part of Musical Fridays, Ted Perry plays the Newes from America Pub in Edgartown tonight. 8 pm - 11 pm. For more information, call 508-627-4397
