Five Things You Need To Know Today: August 5

David McCullough and a former speaker of the Rwandan Parliament will be out and about in Vineyard Haven.

1. Martha's Vineyard Commission executive director Mark London will lead a at the at 5 p.m. The free lecture will be followed by refreshments.

2. Pulitzer Prize–winning author and acclaimed historian David McCullough will , "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris," upstairs at the bookstore in Vineyard Haven at 7:30 p.m.

3. , former speaker of the Rwandan Parliament, will speak at the at noon. The event is open to the public, and will also feature an art show of masks, block prints, sculpture and jewelry, as well as a performance of a song written by campers. Campers are raising money for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Organization though jump-roping, skipping, running and other athletic activities.

4. The will host an artist's reception for cartoonist at 4 p.m. Krasalik's work will be on display through Aug. 31. Refreshments will be served.

5. Storybook character is making her way around the island libraries, thanks to the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association. She’ll stop by the for story time at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Participants are invited to enjoy a “Madeline” book and make a craft.
